(re-post)
On CBC's Radio Pologna they did a segment on International Children's Day, June 1, and interviewed kids about it. The children said they had fun and got a special gift like a book they had been wanting or an article of clothing.
I'd never heard of Children's Day so asked Janina at the Polish Deli about it and how long it had been going on in Poland. She smiled and said, "Oh......" and gave the hand gesture that indicates as long as she could remember. Her face lit up as she described memories of going to school on that day but not doing the usual work but engaging in play. She said she celebrates here with friends and family and her grandson.
It is on my calendar for next year and I will acknowledge it in some fashion. What attracts and intrigues me is that a day to celebrate children focuses on their being, not their doing. Worthwhile for all concerned, I would say. A time to let ourselves experience the enjoyment of our kids, and of being someone's kid ourselves. Children. Whatever the age.
