At a Meet and Mend gathering (which was part of the Re-skilling group at Transitions Victoria) I heard about Knitting Bowls. Learned that they could be done in pottery or wood.
They are used to contain a ball of wool and guide the yarn toward your project.
One made of fibre came to my mind. I had a bowl in progress crocheted from four strands of rayon which was waiting on completion and function.
Small knitting bowl! Crocheted! If I knit something with the yarn contained - then I will decide about changing the name.
I finished the bowl with a round or two more of crochet and added a little flap as the yarn guide.
Some white fluffy yarn was wrapped into a suitable-sized ball (I had forgotten how much fun it is to thumb wrap yarn) and the flap closed with a safety pin. I could have crocheted the flap to the bowl but this gives more flexible access.
The ball does stay put while being used and it looks nice and I like the idea of a bowl with such a use.
Next thought is to do a larger one in wool and tightly felt it and then cut a slot to a hole for the guide. On list ..... about number 46 in line ... Maybe I will come across a woolen sweater someone mistakenly put into a dryer and which is now sadly shrunken (to whoever did it) but fabulously felted (to me) and which I can shape into a knitting bowl with some cutting and stitching. Next church sale is Wednesday. Thrift stores are open daily. On the alert .....
My love of - and collection - of safety pins continues. This one worked perfectly as closure for the flap or tab.
