Thrift store treasure: top hat .... and box!

I had no idea what it was when I saw the box - but it sure looked interesting.  And even more so when the top was lifted up. 

It took a moment, but soonest I realized that .....

with a bit of a nudge a hat p0pped up. (click on IMG)

For the moment contemplative lady is wearing it; looks like her friend shares my admiration and approval.
