(re-post)
That stroll through stash a few days ago resulted in being unable to put back into the stash a small ball of fine wool that came without a label but which I am certain pretty sure hopeful is cashmere. It's been part of the gang in the suitcases of yarn for ages and ages and I admire it each time I am on a search for something specific but it only just demanded immediate attention on that most recent search. What to make? If you 'listen', yarn will 'speak'. This one whispered "handkerchiefs". Oh! Okay. Of course.
I am of an age to recall using handerchiefs, of having a clean one in pocket daily, of finding freshly laundered - and ironed! - handkerchiefs piled on my dresser each week. They were functional but they were also beautiful with a design or some fancy edging. Often they were given as gifts.
So I am knitting memory into this handkerchief. It will be tucked into an envelope and sent to someone. It won't be for nose blowing or wetting-corner-with-tongue and wiping a child's face. It will be more for tucking into a pocket with part showing to remind the person of the sender and the cheerful thoughts that went into its making and are now part of it. It will be for putting under a pillow and being there for the touch in the middle of the night when thought of a friend is needed. It will be for putting into another envelope and sending on to someone else for the sharing.
