(re-post)
This woman gave me a severe case of "wish I knew who made you" - itis. But the church sale people had no idea who had donated her.
I am sure the carver named her and could tell me a great many details of her character. Just look at the thought that went into her clothing, the colours, her stance - her expression! And she is carved with bold confident strokes.
Also, she came to me in that unique and not often but frequent enough to be noted and acknowledged and appreciated way - she was given to me by the seller.
I was admiring the figure from across the table, had not even picked it up or asked the price, when the seller asked if I would like it and offered it to me for free. At times this causes hesitation and reluctance and a bit of confusion but I accepted immediately: it felt very good and right and the exchange was mutual.
Now we share home space and somehow I feel the artist knows this.
I do wish, though, that he or she had signed the work, even with initials .... a "farewell and godspeed" gesture.
