(re-post)
When this wasp dropped by during lunch and was in danger of dropping into the udon soup with its swoop and glide appraisal of what was on the menu today, I took a piece of squid and a shrimp out of the broth for it; the bean sprout was unintentional. (click on photos to enlarge)
It got busy on the squid. I find this kind of squid really rubbery so was impressed with the well- honed blade on the wasp's mandible.
When it had sliced away a portion and flew off to its own private dining place and I noticed the missing piece of green onion I thought "hmm, a gourmet gourmand". And assumed I was being witty. Hah.
When it returned it did its little warning dance to establish sole territory and then lit on the stray beansprout.
Pulled it to the side to get a good grip and some leverage.
Took flight. Now I am thinking that was not a territorial jitterbugging but an ecstatic boogeying about coming upon a most tasty tidbit.
And when it returned for a final course and took the rest of the green onion - I simply stared.
