It was a storm allright! Wind and rain. Leaves and branches and a tree on the ground. The cedars around the library in the Village had the air smelling like Christmas with the pieces broken from them.
Serious rain gear was needed so the coat (it's not actually waterproof as I mentioned in a previous posting but it is marvellous in the wind and has me now focusing on making one from material that is a water shield) and the boots were put on.
The boots are meant for scuba diving, I believe; found them at a church sale a year or so ago and they are perfect in the rain - waterproof, light, comfortable and funky.
The sou'wester was acquired at a garage sale on a hot, sunny afternoon in the summer and it was hard to imagine that its protection and warm lining would be needed.
I actually bought it for its look and the fact that the seller told me it was a genuine sou'wester (correcting my "southwester?" query) from Newfoundland .
When I realized an umbrella would be turned inside out within seconds in that wind I thought of the sou'wester. It worked great! Seems it is more east coast than west coast tradition. Which makes the "gales from the south west" origin of its name appropriate and my thinking it more apt as a north easter, which is where I imagine storms out here come from. South west to me is the warm Pacific!.
